Dear Families,

I hope you had a relaxing Spring Break and that your child is re-energized and ready to learn. As
always, the health and well-being of our students and staff continues to be a primary concern.
To that end, based on Governor Whitmer’s recommendation from this morning’s press
conference, all students (including those in learning labs) at Hamtramck Public Schools
will resume distance learning through the week of April 12. We are planning to have the
K-12 students that have opted for in-person learning in schools on April 19.

At this time, we also plan to continue with the upcoming mandated assessments. Please know, I
was disappointed to see that the U.S. Department of Education rejected Michigan’s request to
cancel statewide assessments for the 2020-2021 school year.

As COVID numbers continue to rise, I believe all students deserve to have greater focus on
social, emotional learning and that mandated assessments are not a true reflection of our
community. I will be urging the U.S. DOE to reconsider this decision.

We greatly apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and are committed to making a safe
and gradual transition back to in-person learning. We continue to work closely with the Wayne
County Public Health Division to determine next steps and hope to have an additional update on
the remainder of the school year sometime next week. We will keep families apprised of
important updates.

I admire the resiliency and strength of our community and am hopeful we will continue to
conquer the challenges posed by the pandemic. The landscape of education is everchanging
during the pandemic and we must pivot quickly for the safety of our school community.
Please contact your school directly if you have any questions. We look forward to continuing
a safe and strong return and look forward to seeing our students remotely on Monday. Thank you
for trusting Hamtramck Public Schools with your child’s education.

As always, if you require assistance, please contact our office at 313-892-2038.
